It's time for lunch

I've been meaning to write about packed lunches for a couple of weeks now - the importance of them to children (and adults), the mixing of socially acceptable food with healthy family food, belonging to both peer group via food and lunch box choice and home by having things your mum or dad packed for you.

Somehow I just can't write a decent post or article about this though. Truthfully I think I have over thought it, I've written an essay plan, for my course on it; written an exercise on how packed lunched evoke the different senses and done lots of thinking.

So there it is, thought I'd write something, it is fascinating; brown bread in the 1970's, Cup a Soup's in the office - but never anywhere else, Wagon Wheels and houmous and bread sticks. I can't write it but I'd love to have your thoughts on it? What's healthy and acceptable to the peers? What is unacceptable to your peers, or was? What is downright fantastic? (e.g. Wagon Wheels)...

Never had packed lunches as a child, but my son always did - until he started college, and now any sort of packed lunch is totally socially unacceptable!
Packed lunch that was:An apple, sandwiches with cheeses, ham or peanut butter (all through primary school he insisted on ham and peanut butter together in the same sandwich...), a pot with 6 cherry tomatoes and some strips of red and yellow peppers, a choccy bar, crisps or cereal bar. Washed down with apple juice (not squash)
Now he may take a sarnie and a bottle of water, but lunch is likely to be a burger, pasty or something from Kentucky. And the fruit in the bowl at home just sits and shrivels...

What about mandwiches - my partner (he's very modern, he makes his own lunches, rather than waiting for the sandwich elf to deliver) has a preference for his own inventions, such as banana and tabasco sandwiches. The other day, he forgot to take his lunch so - waste not want not, I decided to have it for my tea. I knew there'd be too much of everything - that's one of the defining characteristics of mandwiches - but it looked okay. Two crusty rolls. The first had too much marg and too much Red Leicester cheese. that was quite nice. But then I bit into the other - somewhat cautiously, as it was noticably damp and slidy and I couldn't quite identify the aroma - and I discovered too much marg . It turned out to be too much peanut butter, topped by, ulp, too much lime jelly.

PS Sorry for the deletion above - just discovered I don't understand the edit functions on blogger!

What is it with men - they all love too much margarine and junk food. Yuck. Lime jelly and peanut butter sandwich double yuck. Remind me of the time I invented apple slices and peanut butter and put myself off pb for twenty years.

Cheese on toast with sliced apples lurking underneath, Yum yum.

Or cheese on toast with chocolate melted on top...

I love my word today; it's an instruction: "yelsili"!
